Text Box: Principal’s Column Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya is a rapid growing centre of higher study in Kolkata located in the southern part of the metropolis, the college is within the jurisdiction of Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality. It is a co-educational, non-government, grant-in-aid type degree college, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, and recognized by the University Grant Commission, under 2f. The college has enrolled nearly two thousand students. This institution enjoys dedicated service of thirty full time and part time teachers and sixteen non-teaching staffs. This young institution is gradually becoming a hut of both academic and co-curricular activities. The college offers honours courses in eight subjects and general courses in twelve subjects at the Bachelors level. Spacious classrooms, two main hall rooms with public address systems, separate common-rooms for both boys’ and girls’, central library with a peaceful reading room, science laboratory, computer laboratory, cheap store and a canteen are available in this institution. Amenities to the students that are provided here includes concession in tuition fees, endowment prizes, health facilities through Students Health Home, supports claim for railway concession etc. Extension activities in the form of NCC (both boys’ and girls’) Annual Students’ Social (Sur-O-Jhankar), social services in natural calamities, national catastrophes, awareness in environmental pollution and public health observes special mention. A study centre of Netaji Subhas Open University, Kolkata, is also attached to this college to obtain post-graduate degree. This college is beautiful with garden and owns a large ground where different sports activities takes place. A healthy student-teacher relationship enhances the desire of creating an environment of student-centred model of teaching-learning in this institution.
